So you finally got yourself a Russian Blue kitten. Now what?
Russians are very easy to care for. You don't need to feed them a special diet nor do they require brushing more than twice a year in shedding season. Here are a few tips for caring your your fur baby.
If you feel they need a bath a hot wrung out washcloth bath should do the trick. Just get your water as hot as you can and soak the cloth. Wring out and rub your cat with it. They will love it and you won't have to battle with them in the tub or sink with the faucet.
Clip their claws weekly to save your furniture. Pick a day of the week and make that your scheduled clipping day. If you have difficulty clipping try going in the bathroom. A nice quiet room with no place to hide helps them settle down to get business done. Holding them in your lap like a baby makes containing them and praising them while clipping much easier. Try giving some belly rubs in between nails clipped.
Make sure you cat gets plenty of moisture as a lack of it can lead to kidney failure. Cats do not drink water like dogs do. A cat needs moisture in their food to make sure they stay hydrated properly. A good way to do this is to feed 2 wet meals a day. You can feed raw or canned. Leaving dry kibble out for free feeding is good if they tend to not eat enough.
Probiotics and fish oil are good supplements to add to their diet if you are so inclined. It will help their coat be beautiful and plush.
Like any cat a good scratching post with a crows nest near a window will make your cat very very happy.
Continue to socialize your cat throughout its life. Have guests take time to greet and play with your cat so they enjoy company visiting. Special treats for your friends to feed them will help.
Keep your little one happy and healthy and they will be with you for many years to come!
